Design & Engraving

For the inaugural Westmoot 2025, the first official U.S. conference of the U.K. Tolkien Society, I had the privilege of designing and engraving a commemorative medallion for attendees. The project began with my proposal to create a medallion as a unique keepsake, which was approved by the conference leadership. Inspired by the Westmoot logo, which evoked the appearance of a coin, I was tasked with designing the reverse side to complement the logo’s aesthetic. After exploring various concepts, the organizers requested a design featuring the Sun and Moon pillars from the Spring of Arda, as described in Tolkien’s mythology. With limited source material on the Valar’s lamps and few existing artistic interpretations, I initially considered incorporating the iconic towers of the National WWI Museum, the event’s venue. Ultimately, I crafted a fully original design, drawing inspiration from an early version of Tolkien’s mythology. I envisioned the pillars as if forged from Melkor’s ice—angular, crystalline, and reminiscent of Mordor’s architecture as seen in film adaptations. Through multiple iterations, we finalized a clean, iconic line art design optimized for engraving. The medallion itself was designed to resemble an ancient coin, with an aged and corroded finish that I carefully sanded and polished before encasing each piece in plastic. The outer ring, available in either gold or silver, subtly nods to the rings of Tolkien’s lore while also reflecting the golden and silver hues of the Valar’s lamps, Ormal and Illuin. Converting the Westmoot logo into a 3D medallion was a rewarding challenge, and I’m honored to have my original artwork featured on this keepsake.Images of the final concept art and the medallion are displayed alongside this description, with additional details provided in their captions.
